Damiana (Turnera diffusa, syn. Turnera aphrodisiaca) is a shrub native to Central America, Mexico, South America, and the West Indies. It belongs to the family Turneraceae.
Damiana is a relatively small shrub that produces small, aromatic flowers. It blossoms in early to late summer and is followed by fruits that taste very similarly to figs. The shrub is said to have an odor somewhat like chamomile or Cannabis sativa, due to an oil present in the plant. The leaves have traditionally been made into a tea which was used by native people of Central and South America for its aphrodisiac effects. Spanish missonaries first recorded that the Mexican Indians drank Damiana tea mixed with sugar for its ability to enhance lovemaking.

Analysis of essential oils from wild and micropropagated plants of damiana (Turnera diffusa)
Damiana is a medicinal plant with many traditional uses and a reputation as an aphrodisiac. Essential oils produced by this plant are used in traditional medicine, and for the preparation of liquors and tea. The composition of essential oils from wild damiana, plants grown with micropropagated methods involving cell suspension, and explants in solid medium, is presented. Relevant differences are observed in oils coming from wild and micropropagated plants, where micropropagated plants being more uniform with respect to quality and quantity. The most abundant constituents of the oils were caryophyllene oxide, caryophyllene, δ-cadinene, elemene and 1,8-cineol.

Morphological comparison of damiana (Turnera diffusa, Willd.) regenerated in vitro from leaves cultured in solidified medium and liquid cultures
Damiana, a shrub of arid and semi-arid regions, is an important socio-economic plant. Its leaves and stems are used for flavoring and infusion. Damiana is reported to be a nervous system stimulant, aphrodisiac, and diuretic. The only source of stems and leaves are wild plants, and conditions for seed germination and propagation are not known. Damiana plants were micropropagated in liquid culture and solidified medium, and grown in field. Differences in growth were observed between the two types of plants.
