Correlation studies between electronic nose response and headspace volatiles of Eurycoma longifolia extracts
Most herbs have their own characteristic smell due to the presence of volatile compounds. Traditionally, volatiles are analyzed by using sophisticated and expensive gas chromatography (GC) in tandem with a selective mass spectrometric (MS) detector. An alternative approach is described based on the use of an electronic nose. The approach is much simpler than the traditional GC–MS counterparts, but providing key information of the samples analyzed. Using lipids and gas chromatography stationary phase materials with different polarities as sensing membranes, a quartz crystal microbalance smell sensor array has been developed for the analysis of traditional medicinal plants. The headspace vapors of different types of Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) extracts were analyzed by the smell sensor and GC–MS. Correlation between the sensor response and the identified compounds were studied using principal component analysis. Some of the identified compounds exhibited good correlation with the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor array data.

Biphenylneolignans from wood of Eurycoma longifolia
Two novel isomeric 2,2′-dimethoxy-4-(3-hydroxy-1-propenyl)-4′-(1,2,3-trihydroxypropyl) diphenyl ethers, and two novel biphenyls, 2-hydroxy-3,2′,6′-trimethoxy-4′-(2,3-epoxy-1-hydroxypropyl)-5-(3-hydroxy-1-propenyl)-biphenyl and 2-hydroxy-3,2′-dimethoxy-4′-(2,3-epoxy-1-hydroxypropyl)-5-(3-hydroxy-1-propenyl)-biphenyl, were isolated from the wood of Eurycoma longifolia and their structures characterized by spectroscopic means.

New antiulcer quassinoids from Eurycoma longifolia
Nouveaux quassinoïdes antiulcéreux à partir d'Eurycoma longifolia
Abstract
A bioassay study of Pasak bumi (Eurycoma longifolia) led to the isolation of four quassinoids, pasakbumin-A (1), -B (2), -C (4), and -D (7). Both pasakbumin-A (= eurycomanone) 1 and pasakbumin-B 2 exhibited potent antiulcer activity. This prompted us to test some modified quassinoids to reveal that ailanthone (8), the main quassinoid of Ailanthus altissima, and its -epoxide (9) have potent activity and less toxicity. Thus, quassinoids which are generally recognised as antitumor compounds were revealed to have antiulcer activity.

Eurycomanone and eurycomanol, quassinoids from the roots of Eurycoma longifolia Abstract
From the roots of Eurycoma longifolia, used as an Indonesian folk medicine, two highly oxygenated quassinoids, named eurycomanone and eurycomanol were isolated. The structures of both new bitter principles were elucidated by NMR, MS, UV and IR.
Author Keywords: Eurycoma longifolia; Simaroubaceae; quassinoids; eurycomanone; eurycomanol.
