Men's Health Tips

These prevention tools and treatments are helping men maintain and regain their health. Did you know that cure rates for testicular cancer approach 100 percent when detected early? Historically, men have been more reluctant than women to see their physician and they often wait until symptoms are severe. But new procedures and screenings are making it possible for various diseases to be detected while they are still highly treatable.

Here are some tips for living a long and healthy life:

  • Be physically active. Incorporate 30 minutes of activity into your day, every day.
  • See your physician for regular preventive check ups and screenings, such as the PSA test for prostate cancer.
  • Learn the symptoms of heart attack and stroke and if you have them, get help fast. New medications are highly effective if given quickly.
  • Don't smoke.
  • If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation, no more than two drinks per day.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Have your cholesterol checked. If your total cholesterol is more than 240, your risk of heart and stroke is greater.
  • Remember to laugh. Find the humor in life. You'll be happier, and so will those who love you.

Health watch

This month, Harvard Men's Health Watch offers simple but important messages to men at each stage of life. Father's Day is a good time to share this advice with men — and the women who love them.

Studies show that healthy men, and those who have already suffered a heart attack, can reduce cardiovascular risk by eating nuts regularly, reports the Harvard Health Watch . Doctors theorize that:

  • Childhood: Real men have feelings. Boys will be boys, and should be! But they should also learn to acknowledge their feelings and communicate emotions.
  • The teens and 20s: Real men wear seat belts. Risky male behavior can hurt the health of both men and women.
  • The 30s: No man is an island. Don't let work displace family and friends. Instead, establish priorities and begin to build the social networks that can sustain you throughout life.
  • The 40s: Obesity happens. For men who need to lose weight, the “C” word is calories, not carbs. Exercise counts, too. “You don't have to run a marathon to control your weight and improve your health,” says Dr. Harvey Simon, editor in chief of Harvard Men's Health Watch . "But you do have to walk for at least 30 minutes a day."
  • The 50s: Real men have doctors. Talk to yours about screening for common cancers—and get regular tests of blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.
  • The 60s: Expand your horizons. Stay involved. Consider travel, sports, courses, and hobbies.
  • The 70s: Use it or lose it. Mentally stimulating activities can reduce the chances of developing Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Do anything you find interesting, stimulating, and—above all—new.
  • The 80s: Count your blessings. Keep working to stay healthy and active, but also learn to cope with Father Time—and keep looking for good things in your world.
  • The 90s: Share your wisdom. Elders can teach younger generations a lot.

Men's Health - A life sentence

  • Odds that the average man will have a heart attack: 1 in 27
  • Odds that the average man will develop heart disease: 1 in 6
  • The average man is three times more likely to suffer a heart attack than the average
    women

The Best Prevention, of course, results from stuff you already know about: exercise and
diet.
That means regular exercise, at least three times a week, cutting down on fat and eating
more fruit and vegetables.
Two other tips:

Eat more Mexican.
Researchers have found that people whose diets included at least four weekly servings of beans had a 20 per cent lower risk of heart disease and 75 per cent few camping
companions! Beans are high in fibre and low in fat.

Drink Tea instead of Coffee.

Research suggests that drinking tea can lower your heart-disease risk by 44 per cent. This is probably due to the flavonoids (protective anioxidants) in tea.

Odds that the average man has a high cholesterol Count:  1 in 8
(that's 5.5 millimols per litre)

High cholesterol raises your risk of heart attack .
Here are three easy ways to fight cholesterol.

Eat porridge or muesli
You could cut your total cholesterol level by six points, lowering your heart attack risk by
18 percent.

Go Nuts
Macadamias, walnuts, pistachios and almonds contain monounsaturated fats that lower
your level of the harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Sixty grams a day
lowered some LDL cholesterol levels by six points in just two months. You'd think eating
extra nuts would pile on the fat, but new research shows people don't gain weight. Researchers aren't sure why this is.
Do at least three, 20-minute sessions of aerobic exercise a week
This will raise levels of your HDL (good) cholesterol and lower your risk of heart attack.

The average man has a 1-in-10 chance of suffering from high blood pressure
(Higher than 140/ 90 MM HG)
Two ways to control those numbers:

Eat salmon once a week
A US study found that 63 people who at fish every day for four months not only lost 5.4
kilso, but also lowered their blood pressure by six points. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish
may help lower blood pressure and salmon is the richest course of these nutrients.

Lose 1.8 kg
A US heart study found overweight subjects who lost as little as 500g a year, for four
years, cut their risk of suffering from high blood pressure by almost a third.

The average man has a 1-in-6 chance of developing Prostate Cancer and a 1-in-10 chance
of dying from it. They're bad odds. Luckily there are thing you can do to reduce your risk.
Eat to live
Doctors have long known about the protective benefits of soy and lycopene and new
evidence suggests that eating broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower may also offer greater
protection.
Ask your doctor if you should take aspirin.
When Ohio State University researchers studied the case histories of 837 people they
found that those who regularly took aspirisn, ibuprofen or any other non-steroidal, anti
inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cut their risk of developing prostate cancer by two-thirds.

The average man has 100,000 visible hairs on his head.
Losing Hair?
Apart from taking a leaf out of Elton John's book and having a hair transplant, there's little
choice but to grin and bare it!
However, if you'd like it to grow more quickly, move to Perth . It's the sunniest place in
Australia . More sunlight and higher temperatures will cause your hair to increase its
growth from about 1.3cm to 19cm a month.

Get plenty of calcium

Your wife's doctor will tell her to get enough calcium to head off osteoporosis, but no one will extend that courtesy to you. Here's why they should: Researchers at the University of Tennessee have found that calcium appears to decrease fat storage and increase the use of fat for energy. Your goal is to get at least 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day. That's two 8-ounce glasses of milk, a bowl of cereal, and a cup of yogurt.
